Standup Paddle Boarding Has Become A Popular Form Of Exercise!

Standup paddle boarding is a water sport born in the Hawaiian Islands in the 1960s. It is an adaptation of surfing where the surfer stands on the board and uses a paddle to move thru the water. In the 1960s the Beach boys Waikiki used paddle boarding to help holiday visitors who were learning to surf.

In the early 2000s many Hawaiian surfers would use paddle boarding as a methodology of fitness training when the surf was down. Today you can find standup paddle boarding in some of the Outrigger races. An advantage is you don't need waves. You can use standup paddle boards on lakes, rivers or anywhere there is enough water.

Many folks today are using standup paddle boarding as a kind of cross training and keeping in good shape. It is extremely low impact yet gives you a complete workout. It gives you a balancing act that bolsters the muscles in the legs, rear end, back, shoulders and arms. Many triathletes today are using this technique to stay fit.

The paddle boarding industry has long relied on California and Hawaii as their major market. All of a sudden the quickest growing market is in the Midwest in areas like Chicago, Boise Idaho and even Austin Texas. The manufacturers Organization in 2008 announced sales of $7.2 billion.

Some makers report that they cannot make boards quick enough. Every board they make is sold according to surfing legend Laird Hamilton. There is a big market in selling these boards to hotels and resorts that are located close enough to the water.

The standup paddle board craze comes on the heels of the canoe craze while offering better health benefits. Staying on the board depends on basic balancing capabilities, much like yoga, which then braces and tones any and all of your muscles used to stay in position. The good news is folks of all ages can learn standup paddle boarding.

Newbies are prompted to start paddle boarding on their knees in calm water before attempting to stand. When you begin in calm water standing up isn't much more difficult than standing on solid ground. Kids find that paddle boarding is simple to do because it's easy for them to remain balanced.

In most other locations, with calmer water and no surfers, paddle boarding is is surging in popularity.. Of course , the worst that can happen is that you fall off your board and get a little wet. This is a sport that is definitely worth trying.
